About Strategic Thinking

Strategic Thinking, rather than strategic planning, is a synthesizing process utilizing intuition and creativity whose outcome is “an integrated perspective of the enterprise” The problem, as he sees it, is that traditional planning approaches tend to undermine, rather than appropriately integrate, strategic thinking and this tends to impair successful organizational adaptation (Henry Mintzberg, 1994).

For Ralph Stacey (1992), strategic thinking is “. . . using analogies and qualitative similarities to develop creative new ideas . . . (and) designing actions on the basis of new learning”. This differs from strategic planning which focuses on following preprogrammed rules. Raimond (1996) follows a similar line of reasoning by dividing strategic thinking into two modes: “strategy as intelligent machine” (a data-driven, information processing approach) and “strategy as creative imagination”.

Liedtka (1998), stated that strategic thinking intent provides the focus that allows individuals within an organization to marshal and leverage their energy, to focus attention, to resist distraction, and to concentrate for as long as it takes to achieve a goal. In the disorienting swirl of change, such psychic energy may well be the most scarce resource an organization has, and only those who utilize it will succeed.

Strategic Thinking in a Company

Strategic thinking is the way in which people in an organization think about, assess, view, and create the future for themselves and their associates. It is more than responding to both day-to-day as well as long-term problems, opportunities and new realities; it is creating tomorrow. It is not reactive, but proactive. Strategic thinking focuses on how to create a better future by being proactive and adding value to society—through the accomplishment of high payoff results. It is concerned with taking control of the future by developing practical dreams of the results you want to create for your clients and partners. Fortunately, it can also be applied any day at any time and is responsive to the new realities and the accelerated rate of change of today and tomorrow’s world. Strategic thinking always involves change, and often, profound personal change. It often requires your present paradigms and your ways of thinking, relating, and performing. It is imagining the results you want to achieve in the future, it is practical dreaming, creating an ideal future by defining and achieving results that add value.

Tentang “Strategic Thinking”

Strategic Thinking, pemikiran stratejik, lebih dari pengertian perencanaan stratejik. Strategic thinking merupakan sintesa dari proses pendayagunaan intuisi dan kreativitas yang menghasilkan (outcome) “pemikiran perspektif terintegrasi mengenai perusahaan”. Problem masa kini adalah pendekatan perencanaan tradisional yang cenderung mengurangi derajat integrasi, pemikiran stratejik & mengganggu adaptasi bagi kesuksesan organisasi (Henry Mintzberg, 1994).

Bagi Ralph Stacey (1992), strategic thinking adalah “…menggunakan analogi dan perumpamaan kualitatif untuk mengembangkan ide-ide baru yang kreatif… dan mendesain tindakan berbasis pembelajaran baru. Ini berbeda dari perencanaan statejik (strategic planning) yang berfokus pada rangkaian aturan terprogram. Raimond (1996) mengikuti pemikiran yang membedakan strategic thinking dalam 2 mode: “strategi sebagai mesin intelegensia” dan “strategi sebagai imajinasi kreatif”.

Liedtka (1998), menyatakan bahwa strategic thinking menyediakan piranti-fokus yang memungkinkan individu dalam organisasi mampu mengumpulkan dan menyalurkan energi mereka, memfokuskan diri, mengatasi kekacauan dan berkonsentrasi pada jalur yang memacu pencapaian tujuan. Dalam kaitannya dengan pusaran arus perubahan, organisasi acapkali mengalami kelangkaan sumberdaya energi fisik. Hanya mereka yang mampu mendayagunakan potensi energi merekalah yang mampu sukses !

Strategic Thinking Di Perusahaan

Strategic Thinking, adalah jalan bagi para personalia di sebuah perusahaan untuk berpikir tentang kajian, pandangan dan penciptaan masa depan bagi mereka sendiri dan rekan serta perusahaan mereka.
